Installing the update ------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT: Restart your computer before and after you run this update or it may not install correctly. 1. Take the update disk out of your floppy drive, then restart your computer. 2. Insert the update disk into your floppy drive. 3. (Windows 95 or 98) Click the "Start" button, then choose "Run". (Windows 3.1) From the "File" menu of the Program Manager, choose "Run". 4. (QuickBooks 5.0) Type the letter of your floppy drive, then ":\qb50.exe" (for example, "a:\qb50.exe"). (QuickBooks 4.5) Type the letter of your floppy drive, then ":\qb45r16.exe" (for example, "a:\qb45r16.exe"). 5. The update should automatically locate QuickBooks on your hard drive. If it does not, it will prompt you to navigate to your QuickBooks directory. 6. Restart your computer again. IMPORTANT: If you encounter problems, go through this procedure a second time, taking care to restart your computer both before and after you run the update. ------------------------------------------------------------------- II. Changes to the T4 form ------------------------------------------------------------------- For the 1998 tax year, Revenue Canada has developed a new T4 form which can be scanned electronically. This update allows QuickBooks to display and print the new T4. After you install the update, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the new form. The major changes are: * there is an "Employment Code" box in the top part. Certain jobs require a code in this box. Contact Revenue Canada for specific information. * there is an "Other Information" area at the bottom which you use to enter codes and amounts that relate to employment commissions, taxable allowances or other benefits, and deductible amounts that apply. (You no longer enter footnotes on the slip.) To learn more about these codes and how to use them, contact Revenue Canada. * the year is not preprinted. * there is a "Void" box in the top part. Put an "X" in it if the T4 is cancelled. IMPORTANT: After you install the update, check that each employee's deductions appear properly on the new T4 form. If you have already adjusted an employee's T4 form (by double-clicking any of the boxes and entering a new value), you MUST review the adjustment for accuracy. There is a possibility the adjustment was not carried over; if so, you need to enter it again. You should also check that the T4 form is aligned correctly for your printer before you print them. ------------------------------------------------------------------- III.
